Fresher-than-fresh: seafood on Jeju-do Island. On this subtropical volcanic island off the SW tip of Korea, the centuries-old tradition of 'hae-nyo' (sea-maiden) women divers continues. As modern lifestyles become more popular however, this tradition is dying out--only a few thousand haenyo are left--they are hearty women, diving up to 65 feet without oxygen tanks, often for up to two minutes at a time, gathering shellfish, urchins, etc...Some women continue diving into their 70's and 80's! (Gives a new meaning to 'active senior!') You just can't get fresher than this--a few minutes ago, these creatures were on the seafloor...and now, the divers have them on display--still alive!
